Week 5 - Celia

Hii guys!! I am Celia, and as this week we are all stars, I will present my part of this week’s task. I am going to analyse the famously known tool called “Kahoot!”, which is a platform through which students can test their knowledge about any subject in a funny and challenging way. Basically, Kahoot! is used to create questionnaires that students must answer in the shortest possible time, and at the end of each round, the correct answer and the five main scores are displayed on the screen.

To analyse this platform, I will use two tools provided by our teacher Linda; the Rubric for eLearning Tool Evaluation, which presents the main aspects to take into account when analysing this tool, and the Common Sense Privacy Program, where a lot of information about the platform can be found.

The first point to take into account in this analysis is the tool’s functionality. Kahoot! can be used in different size classes, allows creating working groups, makes it easy for students and teachers to understand how it works, offers a support platform and permits using both, textual and visual material in the questionnaires created.

Regarding accessibility, it addresses the needs of all kinds of people and accessibility guidelines are met; it is suitable for every user with any type of disability. Also, Kahoot! does not require specific equipment for using it, so any computer or mobile phone can be used in order to connect to this platform. Furthermore, it can be used without any cost.

It is also a technical tool, as Kahoot! can be used with any operating system and browser available to users, and they do not have to download any additional extension or browser in order to utilise this tool. However, in this field it also has some limitations, as it cannot be fully considered a LMS. This is because this platform can be used in a virtual way in order to improve learning, but it actually cannot create an online space for teaching.

Users can access Kahoot! through the app or through a browser, and there is not any difference between using one way or the other. The functions of this platform are exactly the same independent of the way to access it. However, this platform can only be used with internet connection, so there is no alternative to this service when being offline.

In order to use Kahoot!, a questionnaire must be created, and this can only be done by registering in this platform. Even so, it is not necessary to create an account for participating in a questionnaire, so students do not have to register for playing. Furthermore, Kahoot! collects information of all the users that have an account. That information is mainly used for advertising purposes. However, if an account is created by someone under 13, Kahoot! only collects their name and email address, but does not save any other type of personal information. The content uploaded by a user is not supervised by the platform, but that content can be used to identify any user when sharing a questionnaire.

This tool cannot assure the communication between users in a synchronous way, and instructors are not able to control their students’ anonymity. Nevertheless, the tool is so popular nowadays that most students know how they have to act when using it, avoiding any kind of problem.

Kahoot! also helps teachers and instructors during the teaching process, as it gives the opportunity to create an active learning environment in which feedback is provided so students will be interested in what is being done. The tool allows creating questionnaires, and the questions can be customized so they present pictures or text and even the type of the questions can be changed. This way, the questionnaire becomes more challenging and the students need to focus on what they are doing. The data and scores that are obtained at the end of the round are saved, so that the teacher can monitor their students’ performance. Those scores can be downloaded by the teacher in an Excel format.

Finally, Kahoot! helps improve students’ mental skills for completing cognitive tasks, and makes them organize the information so they can perform better.  This tool gives students the opportunity to test their knowledge in order to receive feedback for improving their learning.

The Common Sense Privacy Program not only provides information about different platforms, but also rates and scores all those platforms. That rating is based on the privacy policies and terms of use of all the tools they have information about. This way, all those platforms are classified into “Pass”, which are the ones that meet the conditions for privacy policies, “Warning”, which corresponds to the ones that do not meet those requirements, or “Fail”, which are the ones that do not have any privacy policy. In this case, Kahoot! corresponds to the “Warning” ones.

Regarding the score, it basically reflects how transparent a tool’s privacy policy is and how good it is when protecting data. Kahoot! receives a 66%.

This service also classifies the different policies of every platform or tool into categories, and later gives a score to each one of them. This way, the main concerns that should be taken into account when registering in any platform are summarized all together and are scored according to some evaluation questions that, basically, reflect all the information explained before. The scores of those categories talking about Kahoot are:

  • Data Collection: 70%

  • Data Sharing: 80%

  • Data Security: 25%

  • Data Rights: 95%

  • Data Sold: 40%

  • Data Safety: 60%

  • Ads & Tracking: 70%

  • Parental Consent: 80%

  • School Purpose: 60%
